Current literature highlights the importance of utilizing a multidisciplinary approach in the treatment of eating disorders. An important health care provider in these multidisciplinary teams is an Occupational Therapist.
Occupational Therapists help those struggling to do important activities in their daily lives, such as eating, cooking, self care, and household chores. These, and other daily activities, are called "occupations". Occupational Therapists are health professionals who help to solve the problems that interfere with a person's ability to do the things that are important to them.
The ability to participate in daily living activities is impacted when an individual has an eating disorder. "Occupations" that are usually health promoting, such as eating and exercising, are used as a way to reinforce the illness. Occupational Therapists can assist people to re-engage in activities, and learn new coping mechanisms as part of the treatment of an eating disorder.
Within occupational therapy treatment, a client-centered and collaborative and goal oriented approach empowers the individual to increase independence in a broad array of health management skills. Occupational Therapists work with clients around mealtimes, managing stress, regulating emotions and moods, increasing independent living skills, and creating a health - promoting routine.
Occupational Therapists can assess a person's sensory, motor, developmental, environmental, cultural and behavioral factors that could be impairing eating.
